Serie A explained
Serie A is the top Italian football league system and has been operating as a round-robin tournament for more than 90 years since the 1929/1930 season. It was organised by the Direttorio Divisioni Superiori until 1943 and the Lega Calcio until 2010, when the Lega Serie A was created for the 2010/2011 season. All the winning teams are recognised with the title of Campione d'Italia (Champion of Italy), which is ratified by the Lega Serie A before the start of the next Serie A championship.
Serie A fun facts
- Serie A hosts three of the world's most well-known football clubs - Juventus, AC Milan and Internazionale (or Inter). These are all founding members of the G-14, a group which represented the most prestigious European football clubs from 2000 to 2008.
- More players have won the coveted Ballon d'Or award while playing at a Serie A club than any league in the world (other than Spain's La Liga).
- Juventus is the only club in the world to have won all possible confederation competitions.
- The most famous current Juventus player is Cristiano Ronaldo, five-time winner of the Fifa Ballon D’Or and considered one of the greatest players of all time. He is so revered that his home nation, Portugal, renamed the Madeira airport the Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (the opening of which was accompanied by the unveiling of a bust of Ronaldo, ridiculed across various social media platforms).
